Mantuma Camp is located in the Big 5, Mkuze Game Reserve (northern Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal). The reserve was proclaimed on 15 February 1912 and today covers approximately 40,000 hectares.

• Drive time from Durban via the N2 north is around 3.5 hours.

• Mantuma Camp is the main accommodation venue in the reserve and offers a range of self-catering units.

Important Information for Guests - Mkuze Game Reserve

Check-In / Check-Out

• Check-in: Mantuma Camp Reception, for all accommodation types.

• Check-in time: From 14h00.

• Check-out time: Before 10h00 on the day of departure.

• If you arrive after reception has closed, your unit number will be displayed on a board outside reception against your name. You may occupy the unit and report the next morning.

Accommodation Overview

General:

• Chalet accommodation is brick under thatch.

• Only the 4-sleeper and 6-sleeper chalets/cottages have air-conditioned lounge/dining areas.

• All other chalets and rest huts do not have air-conditioning, but rooms are generally cool due to high thatched ceilings.

• Units are serviced daily. Guests are required to do their own cooking and washing up.

• No plug points for electric razors are available.

Accommodation Types:

• 2-Sleeper Rest Huts

  • Basic rooms with communal kitchen and bathroom facilities located nearby.

• 2-Sleeper Safari Tents

  • Private en-suite shower and toilet.

  • Each tent has its own nearby kitchenette.

  • Located in a wooded area with extra shade protection.

• 4-Sleeper Safari Tents

  • Two separate tents, each with its own bathroom.

  • Shared kitchen and dining facility.

  • Shaded woodland setting.

• 2-Sleeper Chalets

  • Private en-suite bath/shower combo and toilet.

  • Kitchenette inside the unit.

• 4-Sleeper Chalets

  • Two bedrooms, one bathroom (bath with shower in the bath).

  • Kitchen, lounge/dining room, and veranda.

• 6-Sleeper Cottages

  • Three bedrooms.

  • One bathroom (bath, toilet, hand-basin), plus a separate shower and an additional separate toilet.

  • Kitchen, large lounge/dining area, and a spacious veranda.

Units are serviced daily, but visitors are required to do their own cooking and washing up. No plug points for electric razors are available.

Important Information for Guests

All the units have their own braai (barbecue) stand. Care should be taken not to leave the braai unattended, as hyena have learned that this can be an easy source of food, even with a fire still burning. For safety reasons, please ensure that all braai fires are properly extinguished once cooking is complete.
Monkeys can also be a nuisance and may enter rooms or even vehicles if left open or unattended.

Water: While the water at camp is suitable for bathing and cooking, it is recommended that you do not drink it. Please bring your own drinking water.

Please note: We are only a booking service to secure accommodation at a number of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife park venues. We are not responsible for the condition of the facilities. Due to severe budgetary cuts by the Provincial Government, many facilities have suffered from a lack of maintenance over the years, and some remain in urgent need of repair.

That said, since August 2019, substantial maintenance has been carried out. The chalets have been rethatched, the office complex repaired, and appliances such as fridges, stoves, and microwaves upgraded. Beds, linen, and utensils have also been replaced.

Far and Wild Safaris has no control over the allocation of units or their condition. Should you choose to visit these venues and find fault with the accommodation or service, we are only able to forward your comments to the Park authorities. Unfortunately, no compensation can be offered if the facilities or service do not meet expectations. Please contact us should you require any further clarification.

Roads: Within the Mkuze Game Reserve, the roads are a mix of tar and gravel and generally in good condition. However, the two entrance roads outside the park are rough and can be very potholed or corrugated in sections. They remain suitable for normal sedan vehicles, but care should be exercised when driving.

Arrival: If you arrive after Mantuma Camp reception has closed, your allocated unit number will be displayed on a board outside reception next to your name. You may go directly to your unit and report to reception the following morning. Most major credit cards are accepted.

Facilities and Activities:

• The Mkuze Game Reserve has several upgraded (2018) and newly rebuilt hides at three waterholes and Nsumo Pan.

• Should accommodation in the reserve not be available, the nearby Ghost Mountain Inn is a popular alternative offering full restaurant facilities and convenient access as a day visitor to the reserve.

• All guided walks are subject to the availability of a qualified guide.

• The reserve also offers two bush lodges: Nhlonhlela and Umkhumbe (Umkhumbe is only available from 1 November to 28 February). These lodges sleep up to 8 guests each. Guests for these bush lodges check in at Mantuma Camp.

• Please note: Nhlonhlela Bush Lodge is currently closed for repairs.

Should you prefer a private fully hosted and catered for luxury Lodge, there are a number in the Mkuze area. The really excellent 23,000 ha Manyoni Private Game Reserve has venues we can recommend. Leopard Mountain Game Lodge, Rhino River Lodge and the tented Rhino Sands and the tented Mavela Game Lodge these are all fully hosted and catered for venues. Then there is Zebra Hills Safari Lodge which is selfcatering with the option for being catered too.
Slightly further south is the excellent Thanda Private Game Reserve with its tented camp, Main Lodge and its Villa..

• The Mkuze Game Reserve in summer, is in a low risk Malaria area. Mosquito nets are provided in each of the accommodation units.
  
• Gate entry times:
  Summer (1 October - 31 February)   05h00 – 19h00.
  Winter (1 March - 30 September)   06h00 – 18h00.
  
• Office hours are from 08h00 – 16h30 daily. Sundays and Public Holidays are 08h00 – 14h00 daily.
